Proposition 8 was a statewide ballot proposition in California. On November 4, 2008 voters approved this ballot by 52%. The ballot title of Proposition 8 was Eliminate Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. It adds a new amendment to the California Constitution, which says, “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California”. Before this was passed, same sex marriage was a constitutionally protected right in California. Three lawsuits, which seek to invalidate Proposition 8, were filed soon after the election. The California Supreme Court announced that it will consider these lawsuits.
The I H8 Prop 8 Project is a website that presents people, organizations, businesses, and religious organizations that we feel are actively working against rights for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered (GLBT) people and recommends ways that an engaged citizen could protest them. This started out as a Drexel University student project but can hopefully turn out to be so much more. Our mission is to give you all the information that you need to know about who is helping Prop 8 get passed, give you some ideas, and give you a space to post your suggestions so hopefully you will get active in helping every citizen get their rights back.
